CAUSES OF ECZEMA

Causes of eczema

The specific cause of eczema remains unknown, but it is believed to develop due to a combination of hereditary (genetic) and environmental factors.

Children are more likely to develop eczema if a parent has had it or another atopic disease. If both parents have an atopic disease, the chances increase further.

Environmental factors are also known to bring out the symptoms of eczema. These include:

  • Irritants – soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, juices from fresh fruits, meats, or vegetables
  • Allergens – dust mites, pets, pollens, mold, dandruff
  • Microbes – bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, viruses, certain fungi
  • Hot and cold temperatures – hot weather, high and low humidity, perspiration from exercise
  • Foods – dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, soy products, wheat
  • Stress- it is not a cause of eczema but can make symptoms worse
  • Hormones – women can experience worsening of eczema symptoms at times when their hormone levels are changing, for example during pregnancy and at certain points in their menstrual cycle.

PREPARATION BEFORE PLAY HOLI

Checklist:

Must-haves before Holi:

A bottle of oil (Coconut/ Sesame/ Mustard/ Olive)
Nail Polish (Colored or clear)
Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)
Pair of spectacles, no contact lenses please
Protect your skin and hair

It is extremely important to apply at least two generous layer of oil to your hair and scalp, face, neck, shoulders, arms, legs and any exposed area of your body, especially the insides of your ears and navel, and the area between fingers and toes. Make sure you moisturize your lips as well. I recommend coconut, olive, mustard or sesame (til) oil. Applying oil will help get the color off easily when you bathe after Holi. It will also protect your skin and hair from dryness, fizziness, roughness and irritation.

Girls, make sure you tie your hair after applying oil. Braid it or tie it into a bun to protect them from getting damaged in case someone pulls them while playing Holi.

Guys, don’t shave for 2-3 days before Holi. This would protect your pores from color granules and chemicals.

CHEMICAL PEEL

Chemical peels can improve the skin’s appearance. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which makes it blister and eventually peel off. The new skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  •  Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma)due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills.
  • Improve the look and feel of the skin.

HIV AND AIDS

What Is AIDS?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.

HIV causes AIDS by attacking CD4 cells, which the immune system uses to protect the body from disease. When the immune system loses too many CD4 cells, you are less able to fight off infection and can develop serious, often deadly, infections. These are called oppurtunistic infections(OIs).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIV AND AIDS?

When someone dies of AIDS, it is usually OIs or other long-term effects of HIV that cause death. AIDS refers to the weakened state of the body’s immune system that can no longer stop opportunistic infections.

You do not have AIDS as soon as you are infected with HIV. You can live with HIV (be HIV+) for many years with no signs of disease, or only mild-to-moderate symptoms. People living with HIV and taking HIV drugs as prescribed have a very low risk of progressing to AIDS. But without treatment, HIV will eventually wear down the immune system in most people to the point that they have low numbers of CD4 cells and develop opportunistic infections. Without treatment, this usually happens in five to ten years.

The definition of AIDS was established before there was effective treatment for HIV. It indicated that a person was at higher risk for illness or death. In countries where HIV treatment is readily available, AIDS is no longer as relevant as it once was. This is because having access to effective treatment means people can stay healthier even with low CD4 counts. Also, someone could have received the AIDS diagnosis years ago even though they no longer have a low CD4.

DANDRUFF

For most teens and adults, dandruff symptoms are easy to spot: white, oily-looking flakes of dead skin that dot your hair and shoulders, and a possibly itchy, scaly scalp. The condition may worsen during the fall and winter, when indoor heating can contribute to dry skin, and improve during the summer.

Almost anyone can have dandruff, but certain factors can make you more susceptible:

  • Age. Dandruff usually begins in young adulthood and continues through middle age. That doesn’t mean older adults don’t get dandruff. For some people, the problem can be lifelong.
  • Being male. Because more men have dandruff, some researchers think male hormones may play a role.
  • Oily hair and scalp. Malassezia feeds on oils in your scalp. For that reason, having excessively oily skin and hair makes you more prone to dandruff.
  • Certain illnesses. For reasons that aren’t clear, adults with neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, are more likely to develop seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. So are people with HIV infection, or those who have compromised immune systems from other conditions.

SKIN TAGS

Skin tags are invariably benign – non cancerous – tumors of the skin which cause no symptoms, unless it is repeatedly rubbed or scratched, as may happen with clothing, jewelry, or when shaving. Very large skin tags may burst under pressure.

A cluster of skin tags.
Skin tags are benign, asymptomatic skin tumors, often raised from the skin on fleshy peduncles.

Skin tags are composed of a core of fibers and ducts, nerve cells, fat cells, and a covering or epidermis.

Some people inherit an increased susceptibility to skin tags, and being obese or overweight also appears to increase the likelihood of developing this skin anomaly. Skin tags affect people of all genders equally, but are more likely to occur in people who are pregnant and/or who have diabetes.

Winter Skin Care Tips

WINTER SKIN CARE TIPS

TAKE WARM WATER SHOWER DAILY

Have a warm water (not too hot)  shower daily, its important for the hygiene of your skin. You should do so in winter too. Keep these winter skin care tips in mind when stepping into the shower:

Avoid harsh soaps and stick with mild non-drying soaps.
Apply your moisturizing cream immediately after bathing and toweling dry (when the skin is still moist), This will seal the moisture.

MOISTURIZING
Select a really good moisturizer. Without doubt, this is the most important winter skin care tip.

For your day cream, choose a Good Moisturizers, it forms a protective barrier against the environment and its elements. Apply moisturizers to dry prone areas like face, lips, hands, and feet.

Are you suffering from painful cracks around the fingertips,or feet? Do you have hard and dry skin on the hands or feet?

You may need some prescription options or antibiotic ointments and good moisturizers to treat and heal the cracks and fissured areas.

Do you have a past history of this type of condition? In this case, plan ahead and keep your regular therapeutic creams handy. Apply them before any fissures form.

Do you have psoriasis or eczemas? Consult Dermatologist and keep your prescriptions and ointments handy. Ask your doctor about the moisturizers that you should use.
